Meta preview vs Facebook Sharing Debugger

Your meta preview, Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector and X Card Validator overlap but are not interchangeable. When to use each.

Every platform that renders a share card has its own crawler, its own cache and its own rules. That is why one debugger is never enough: a tag set that produces a perfect Facebook card can render as a small thumbnail on LinkedIn, and a platform’s own tool is the only thing that reflects that platform’s cache.

What each tool covers

ToolPlatformsWhat it showsLimits
Meta preview debuggerFacebook, X, LinkedIn, generic OGRendered card per platform plus missing or malformed tagsEmulates crawlers; cannot clear a platform cache
Facebook Sharing DebuggerFacebook, MessengerFacebook’s live scrape, raw tags, “Scrape Again”Facebook only
LinkedIn Post InspectorLinkedInLinkedIn’s scrape and title/imageLinkedIn only
X Card ValidatorXCard renderX only; access is intermittent
Slack / DiscordNone—No public debugger; re-post to test

Why a single tool is not enough

Three reasons:

  1. Different minimums. LinkedIn may reject an image it considers too small instead of upscaling it, Facebook will render a smaller image, and X needs twitter:card to show the wide layout. One image can pass one check and fail another.
  2. Different caches. Each platform caches its scrape independently. Re-scraping on Facebook does not clear LinkedIn.
  3. Different precedence. X prefers twitter:* tags and falls back to og:*. Facebook ignores twitter:* entirely. A broken twitter:image breaks the X card even when og:image is perfect.

The ground truth: the raw HTML

Before any debugger, get the HTML the crawlers receive. This is the only step that is not an approximation:

curl -sL --compressed \
  -A "LinkedInBot/1.0" \
  https://example.com/page | grep -iE 'og:|twitter:'

If a tag is missing here, no debugger will invent it. Fix the HTML first, then preview.

A workable workflow

  1. Check the source. Fetch the URL with a crawler user agent and confirm every tag is present and absolute.
  2. Preview broadly. Run it through the meta preview debugger for a fast multi-platform read and a list of what is missing.
  3. Confirm per platform. Re-scrape in the Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector and X Card Validator before a launch. These reflect each platform’s own cache and rendering.
  4. Fix, purge, re-scrape. Change the HTML, purge your CDN cache, then re-scrape — in that order.

What each tool is actually for

  • Meta preview: a single-page, multi-platform first pass. Best for finding obvious faults fast and seeing all platforms side by side.
  • Facebook Sharing Debugger: the authority on what Facebook will show, including its cache state. Use it to force a re-scrape.
  • LinkedIn Post Inspector: the authority for LinkedIn, which tends to be the strictest about image size.
  • X Card Validator: the authority for the X card, though it is the least reliable of the four and sometimes requires a login.

Neither replaces the other: the aggregator is faster, and the platform debugger is authoritative for its platform.

Common mistakes

Trusting one debugger. A green check on Facebook says nothing about LinkedIn. Cross-validate the platforms you actually share to.

Skipping the curl check. If two debuggers disagree, the raw HTML tells you which one is right.

Re-scraping before purging the CDN. The platform caches whatever the edge served. Purge first, or you cache the bug again.

Testing a URL you have not deployed. Debuggers fetch the live page; a local build is invisible to them.

Assuming previews are personalized. Crawlers are logged out and see one cacheable version. If your page personalizes the head, test as an anonymous visitor.

Editing tags and expecting instant results. Each platform caches until you re-scrape, and search engines cache favicons and snippets on their own schedule too.

Where this tool fits

The meta preview debugger is the fast first pass: one fetch, every platform’s card, and a concrete list of missing or malformed tags. Then confirm on each platform’s own tool before you rely on the result.

Frequently asked questions

▸ Is a meta preview tool a replacement for the Sharing Debugger?

No. A preview tool fetches once and renders every platform side by side, which is faster for finding faults. The Sharing Debugger is authoritative for Facebook because it reflects Facebook's own cache and rendering, and it can force a re-scrape.

▸ Why do I need more than one preview tool?

Each platform has its own crawler, cache and minimums, and it caches independently. Clearing Facebook does not clear LinkedIn. A card that passes one check can fail another, so you confirm on the platforms you actually share to.

▸ What is the fastest way to debug a broken card?

Fetch the URL with a crawler user agent and read the raw og: and twitter: tags. If a tag is missing in the source HTML, no debugger will invent it. Fix the HTML, then preview and re-scrape.

▸ Do preview tools let me clear a platform cache?

No. Only the platform's own debugger can trigger a re-scrape. Preview tools emulate what the crawler would parse, but they cannot purge Facebook's or LinkedIn's cache.

▸ Why do my previews look different from a real share?

Real clients sometimes render a variant the debugger does not show, and caches can differ. Treat the raw HTML plus the platform debugger as the reliable pair, and re-post to test Slack and Discord, which have no debugger at all.
